Del Genio: Napoli must change its game to fit De Bruyne
The Napoli-born journalist, speaking on the Napolità YouTube channel, questioned how Massimiliano Allegri is using Kevin De Bruyne and called for a system built around the Belgian's strengths.
Paolo Del Genio, the Napoli-born journalist, used the Napolità YouTube channel to reopen the debate over how head coach Massimiliano Allegri is deploying Kevin De Bruyne, arguing Napoli's current style wastes the Belgian midfielder's qualities.
"De Bruyne? I've seen 2-3 frightening bursts even at Napoli, 5-6 per game with Belgium, because at Napoli he plays a kind of football that doesn't suit his characteristics at all. So does he have to sacrifice himself like Højlund, who gets 2 touches a game in the opposition box? Does De Bruyne have to receive the ball in the final 30-40 metres only 2-3 times a game? If we carry on like this and just hope for a flash of quality, I don't know where we end up — I think nowhere," Del Genio said.
The comparison stems from the international break: De Bruyne scored twice for Belgium in a 3-0 win over Turkey, only to pick up a booking in the 80th minute that will rule him out of the Nations League game with France. With Napoli, ninth in the table on 7 points after 5 matchdays and coming off a 1-1 draw in Florence, those moments of quality have been rare.
