Di Marzio: Napoli working on McTominay renewal, deal possible

The Sky Sport journalist downplays exit rumours and already looks ahead to January, when he says Napoli must strengthen more than one area.

A new contract for McTominay is still possible, according to Sky Sport journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. "McTominay's renewal is an important piece, the club is already working to try to find an agreement and I think in the end it can be found," he said.

That is a different picture from the one that circulated on 1 October, when reports spoke of the Scot asking for €8-9m and a close exit. Di Marzio frames the situation around a summer window that closed with only two signings, Favasuli and Badiashile, which he called "two absolutely low-cost operations", driven by budget limits and the number of players returning from loan. McTominay himself has been available to Allegri for just 146 minutes so far this season.

Di Marzio says Napoli will need to move in January, and not just in one area: "Several players have reached the end of their cycle and Allegri needs fresh legs, both in defence and in midfield," adding that "Højlund alone isn't enough to carry the whole weight of the attack across three competitions." On the winter window, he said De Laurentiis, Allegri and Manna already have a shared plan.
