Fiorentina 1-1 Napoli: Gilmour's opener cancelled out at the Franchi

Napoli's afternoon at the Franchi nearly went wrong before it began. Atta and Fagioli hit the bar twice in two minutes, at the 17th and 19th, as Allegri's side struggled to find their footing.

The rest of the half passed quietly, with only a yellow card for Mastantuono in the 42nd minute to note. Napoli went in at the break a goal up, having made more of their one real chance than Fiorentina had of their two efforts against the woodwork.

The second half swung back the other way almost immediately. In the 51st minute Ndour set up Jiménez, who levelled the score and wiped out Napoli's interval lead. Allegri turned to his bench, sending on Neres and Lucca in the 58th minute to add weight to the attack, but Napoli could not find the goal to go back in front.

Yellow cards for Ranieri in the 62nd minute and De Gea in the 83rd reflected the rising tension rather than genuine goalscoring chances, and the score stayed at 1-1 through to full time.

A lead that did not last

Napoli went ahead away from home and were pegged back within minutes of the restart, a recurring flaw that matters more than the league position it leaves them in: ninth on 7 points after five rounds.

Opinion on Allegri remains split. A majority still back him, while a vocal minority want him out and have also been critical of how his press conferences are run. A draw like this settles nothing either way: it supports those who see a team still fragile when ahead, and those who point out Napoli have at least shown they can take the lead away from home.
