Napoli eye Szymanski as midfield plan B for January

Mamadou Coulibaly of Monaco remains the priority, but Napoli have added Rennes midfielder Sebastian Szymanski to their shortlist for the winter window.

Napoli's search for a January midfield reinforcement has thrown up another Polish name. Sebastian Szymanski, the 27-year-old left-footed attacking midfielder at Rennes, has been identified as an alternative to Mamadou Coulibaly, 22, of Monaco, who remains the first choice.

Born in Biała Podlaska and a product of Legia Warsaw, Szymanski has played in Russia with Dinamo Moscow, on loan at Feyenoord and at Fenerbahçe, who sold him to Rennes in January for €9.5m plus €1m in bonuses. Rennes, who hold him under contract until 2029, would want at least €20m to let him go. He has a goal and an assist in four league appearances this season, after 2 goals and 4 assists in 22 games at Fenerbahçe, and his Rennes coach Habib Beye has praised his set pieces and his energy when pressing to win the ball back.

Como — who see him as a possible heir to Nico Paz — along with clubs from the Premier League and Liga are also interested. In midfield, Napoli's own picture is complicated: Frank Anguissa's contract, which expires on 30 June, is proving hard to renew, with Milan said to have already made enquiries about signing him on a free transfer, and Stanislav Lobotka is in the same position. Napoli have fond memories of Polish players, from Arkadiusz Milik to Piotr Zieliński — it remains to be seen whether the club will commit €20m to a plan B this time.
