Across the first five matchdays, the average age of every Napoli player used climbs to 29 years and 14 days — more than a year older than Inter, next on the list. It's a number that shadows a shaky start under head coach Allegri.
Napoli have the oldest squad in Serie A. Against Bologna at the Maradona, head coach Allegri fielded a starting XI with an average age of 29 years and 221 days — the highest in the league. Widen the count to every player used across the first five matchdays, starters and substitutes, and the average climbs to 29 years and 14 days, over a year more than Inter, second on the list.
Seven players in the regular XI are over 30, starting with De Bruyne, Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Lobotka and Anguissa. Pick only from the club's youngest options instead and the average falls to 23.54: Pugliese, born in 2008 and just 18, in goal behind Favasuli, Marianucci, Rafa Marín and Olivera, with Gilmour, Vergara and McTominay in midfield, and Alisson Santos, Højlund and Giovane in attack.

The figures line up with what's happening on the pitch: ninth place on 7 points after five rounds, and a midfield stretched thin by the double load of Serie A and the Champions League, with Anguissa out injured (adductor) and McTominay only recently back from heart surgery. Experience is the base of the squad built over the summer; the first real test comes on 10 October at the Maradona, against Frosinone.
