Napoli's new mini-documentary tells the story of its Argentine fans

"Tanos" is out now on the club's official YouTube channel, filmed in Buenos Aires, and traces the bond between Napoli and Argentina through supporters who have never set foot in the city but see themselves in the club.

Napoli has gone to Buenos Aires to tell a part of its identity that has nothing to do with matches. From Tuesday 6 October, the club's official YouTube channel is hosting "Tanos", a new mini-documentary about the bond between Naples and Argentina. There is no match, no transfer talk here — just a community of supporters who live and breathe Napoli thousands of kilometres from the Maradona stadium.

The title comes from "napolitanos", the term used in Argentina for Italians who emigrated across the Atlantic, shortened to "tanos". The club picked it because it captures exactly where the documentary starts: a heritage that crossed the ocean in the suitcases of people who left Naples for Argentina, passed down along with family memories, traditions, and a way of following football.

The people at the centre of the film are Argentine supporters who have never been to Naples yet have made Napoli a second home anyway. Their testimonies describe a passion handed from parents to children, expressed through the rituals that accompany matchdays, building a portrait of a community that recognises itself in the same colours from an ocean away.

Running through it all, inevitably, is Diego Armando Maradona: the central figure in the relationship between Napoli and Argentina, whose legacy still binds together new generations of supporters who know that connection only through family stories, never having seen him play.

"Tanos" is part of the Centenario season programme, marking 100 years since the club's foundation on 25 August 1926 — the same strand that, a few days ago, brought the Corsiero del Sole, Napoli's old emblem, back onto the third kit. It is another chapter in the story of the club, this time written by those who carry it forward beyond the city's borders.

It is striking that, at a time when the team is not delivering the results the fanbase hoped for, the club has chosen to show precisely this kind of attachment to the shirt — one that comes from far away and needs no league table to justify it. It is the same feeling around Naples these days: more affection for the colours than demands over points. A documentary does not change a season, but it says something about what remains when results are not enough.
