Napoli's press split on Venezia lineup and camp mood

Two days after the 3-1 defeat at Villarreal, Italian papers agree on four changes for the Venezia game but clash over why De Bruyne is dropped and what the mood really is at Castel Volturno.

Two days after Napoli's 3-1 defeat at Villarreal, Friday's sports pages run on two separate tracks: the tactical read of the Venezia eve, and the account of what happened inside Castel Volturno after the Champions League loss. Gazzetta dello Sport frames the wider picture with a blunt headline, "Scempions", on the disastrous European campaigns of the Italian clubs — Napoli included in that reckoning, not spared from it.

On team news, Corriere dello Sport and Sky Sport tell the same story. Corriere reports four changes from head coach Allegri — Meret, Spinazzola, Lobotka and Lang — under the headline "A Venezia un altro Napoli" ("A different Napoli at Venezia"). Sky Sport describes turnover with starts for Lucca and Marianucci, and Neres left out. Both agree on one point: De Bruyne and Højlund together on the bench.

On why De Bruyne is left out, the accounts diverge. La Repubblica ties the omission to the "Villarreal case", close to a punishment after Politano's back-pass and the Belgian's flat performance. Sky Sport and Il Mattino dismiss that reading as simple rotation, with no punishment involved. One paper accuses, two deny — two opposite readings of the same fact.

On the internal climate, Il Mattino describes hours of tension at Castel Volturno, with Allegri furious at his players after the defeat. La Repubblica raises the stakes further, writing of a furious De Laurentiis — though the same Mattino insists the relationship remains idyllic. In the same vein, Corriere dello Sport raises the idea of a training retreat lasting until the Bodø/Glimt game if results don't improve, a claim Carlo Alvino denies outright.

Sky Sport completes the picture on Neres with two different versions of the same absence: one report cites a low-grade injury confirmed by the club, with a possible return for the Lazio game or after the international break; another Sky piece puts the absence down to "muscular discomfort". Corriere dello Sport adds that ticket sales for Napoli-Bodø/Glimt have been sluggish, with plenty of seats still free at the Maradona compared with the demand before the Roma game.

Our take

What emerges isn't one picture but three or four contradictory ones: De Bruyne punished or simply rested, De Laurentiis furious or the relationship idyllic, a retreat coming or one that never existed. There's too much speculation riding on a single training session.

Too little of it concerns what actually matters on Saturday 17 October: Venezia are bottom of the table with zero points, and after Villarreal there is no excuse that holds up. Lost in all the chasing of backstage stories is a simple question nobody asks with the same insistence: why does a squad with this quality collapse in four minutes against a provincial side, and what is Allegri actually changing to stop it happening again.
