Napoli said no to Mauro Icardi in August
The free agent striker, released by Galatasaray, was pitched to the board before the window shut — Allegri had no room for him in his plans.
Mauro Icardi was offered to Napoli last August, before the summer window shut on Tuesday 1 September at 20:00. The club's answer was a flat no: the Argentine striker, a free agent after his spell at Galatasaray, did not fit into head coach Allegri's plans.
Icardi arrives off a 16-goal season in Turkey, but Napoli's business went elsewhere: first a run at Vlahović, dropped over his financial demands, then a move for Gabriel Jesus, which also fell through. The attack remains unsettled — Lucca, signed for €35m from Udinese, has yet to convince, and Højlund is struggling to make an impact in the box, managing just two touches there across the Genoa and Inter games.

Turning down Icardi hasn't solved the problem Napoli have carried for five matchdays: seven goals scored, and still no double-digit striker in the squad. Lucca and Højlund remain the players Allegri has to build a solution around, with the market shut until 2 January.
