Napoli split on Vergara recovery time as reports diverge

The day after Vergara's soleus diagnosis, Italian outlets tell two very different stories about how long he will be out, while McTominay's contract talk also runs on.

Italian outlets cannot agree on one number: how long Vergara will be out with the strain to his right soleus muscle.

La Repubblica, in a piece picked up by ilNapolista, strikes an optimistic note. The midfielder would miss "only" four matches — Frosinone, Villarreal, Venezia and Bodø/Glimt — though the paper adds that his recovery could "run into November".

Sky Sport's Massimo Ugolini describes a more serious picture: the injury is "more serious than first thought", with Vergara facing "at least thirty days" out rather than the four games Repubblica suggests. Corriere dello Sport runs the starkest headline of all — "Vergara ko: Napoli devastated by the international break" — framing the injury within a midfield already stretched thin by Anguissa's absence and the unresolved McTominay situation.

On McTominay's new deal, Sky Sport reports growing confidence at the club, with the prospect of reinforcements in attack too in the January window. Sky's Gianluca Di Marzio is more specific, saying Napoli are working on an agreement they believe they can reach, but warning the club will still need to act in the window regardless, since "Højlund alone isn't enough".

One more headline stands out: TuttoMercatoWeb asks why Di Lorenzo risks losing his place in the national team. For now, only the headline is known — no further detail has emerged.

Our take

The most telling thing in Wednesday's press review isn't a fact, it's the absence of one: nobody really knows how long Napoli will be without Vergara, and the gap between four games and a month matters for a midfield already down to the bone, with Anguissa on the margins and McTominay's future unresolved. Corriere's headline gets closest to it — this is a squad devastated by the international break, not by one injury alone. What's missing from today's coverage is the harder question: with a thin midfield and the window shut until January, what plan does Allegri actually have for Saturday, beyond the formation guesses doing the rounds in recent days.
