Napoli track Monza striker Varela but Benfica can match any bid

Napoli want the 2005-born Portuguese forward for January or June. His old club have no buy-back clause, but they do keep the right to match any offer.

Napoli are watching Gustavo Varela, Monza's Portuguese centre-forward born in 2005, ahead of the January and June transfer windows.

The obstacle is Benfica. They sold him to Monza outright last summer for just over €2m. Reports in Portugal earlier this month said Benfica had a buy-back clause, but they do not. What they kept is matching rights: if Monza receive a concrete offer, Benfica can match it and take him back to Lisbon.

Monza own 100% of the player, so they alone decide what he is worth. Varela is averaging a goal a game at the start of this Serie A season. He is a physical, complete centre-forward, and that is why other top clubs in Italy and abroad are also following him.

For Napoli the risk is clear. With that clause in place, whoever moves first may end up setting the price for Benfica. The window reopens on Saturday 2 January. Before then, at the end of October, Napoli play a midweek away game at Monza.
