Napoli were also watching Mascardi before Torino move
Former Spezia sporting director Stefano Melissano says two Premier League clubs also tracked the 2006-born goalkeeper before he chose Torino in the window that closed on 1 September.
Napoli had their eye on Diego Mascardi as far back as his first-team debut for Spezia, according to Stefano Melissano, the club's sporting director at the time.
Melissano described three years of development for the young goalkeeper: two seasons training with the first team, then a spell left out of the Primavera (the youth side) squad to push him towards a starting berth.

"After two games there was interest from Napoli, as well as two Premier League clubs who came to watch him regularly," Melissano said. "Torino is the right step for him" — the destination Mascardi picked in the transfer window that shut on 1 September.
Napoli's current goalkeeping options are Alex Meret, Nikita Contini and Vanja Milinković-Savić, the latter starting in the 1-1 draw at Fiorentina after Meret's injury. The department is settled, and Mascardi remains just a name that was tracked, never seriously pursued.
