Papers can't agree on Napoli's lineup for Venezia
Four days after the 3-1 collapse at Villarreal, Saturday 17 October's papers are fixated on Allegri's choices for the Penzo, Venezia's ground — and no two of them tell the same story.
Saturday's papers are dominated by one question: who starts for Napoli at the Penzo, in the first league game since the 3-1 defeat at Villarreal. Read enough of them, though, and no two newspapers describe the same XI — a sign of how nervous this build-up has become, and of how every selection is now read as a verdict on the team.
Corriere dello Sport leads with a "mini revolution": Allegri changing five men from Villarreal, with Lucca replacing Højlund and De Bruyne rested, while contests for places continue in defence and in attacking midfield.
Sky Sport runs similar probable line-ups to Corriere dello Sport, but with one extra detail.
"Allegri hands starts to Lucca and Beukema! De Bruyne on the bench."
Il Mattino tells an entirely different story — and contradicts itself along the way. One piece has Giovane having "overtaken Lucca in the pecking order" and in line for a starting shirt; another has Allegri saying "goodbye to rotation" and starting Højlund and McTominay instead. The two Mattino versions cancel each other out, and both are contradicted by Corriere dello Sport and Sky Sport on who plays up front.
Gazzetta dello Sport focuses on midfield instead, reporting that Allegri will pair two holding midfielders rather than field a single playmaker. Tuttosport shifts attention from the XI to the mood in the camp: the paper says the head coach is less worried about his starting line-up than about the attitude the team has shown, with Napoli down to three wins in eight competitive games. Corriere dello Sport, in a separate piece, frames the day as a crossroads shared by Napoli, Inter and Roma, all three needing a reaction after European disappointments — and notes that ticket sales for Napoli-Bodø/Glimt remain weak, with plenty of seats still unsold at the Maradona.
Our take
Four papers, four different line-ups: more than revealing Allegri's actual plan, that tells you how much smoke and how few verified facts surround this build-up. What interests us most, among all the rival contests for places, is the one note that actually touches the real issue: Tuttosport's line about a head coach worried about attitude, not system. After Villarreal, supporters are not asking whether Lucca or Giovane starts — they are asking the team to turn up with the right attitude, and on that, Saturday's papers have little to say. The many empty seats still up for grabs against Bodø/Glimt tell the same story: a growing distance between the fanbase and what's being shown on the pitch.
