Vergara ruled out of Frosinone, Villarreal and Venezia with soleus injury

Scans at the Pineta Grande Hospital on Tuesday 6 October confirmed a medium-grade strain, a blow that also hands Kevin De Bruyne back his place in Allegri's midfield.

Antonio Vergara underwent scans at the Pineta Grande Hospital on Tuesday 6 October after the muscle problem he picked up on international duty with Italy. Napoli's statement left no doubt: "a medium-grade strain of the right soleus." The midfielder will be out for at least a couple of weeks, missing Napoli-Frosinone, Villarreal-Napoli and the trip to Venezia.

The timing is brutal for the midfield battle. Until Monday 5 October, Vergara — on the back of 162 minutes played this season — had been favourite over Kevin De Bruyne for Saturday's game at the Maradona. Now head coach Allegri has no choice: De Bruyne reclaims a starting shirt that had been contested minute by minute in recent weeks.

Napoli already go into the Frosinone game without Buongiorno, McTominay, Marianucci, Spinazzola and Alisson Santos through injury, plus Favasuli sidelined for six weeks — another name added to the absence list four days out from the Maradona match.
