Azzi: some inside Napoli bragged about pushing Conte out
The Repubblica journalist revisits last summer's title predictions and claims a faction inside the club wanted Antonio Conte gone, as Napoli sit ninth after five defeats this season.

Marco Azzi, a journalist with Repubblica, has gone back on social media to last summer's predictions that tipped Napoli as strong title contenders despite the switch from Antonio Conte to Massimiliano Allegri on the bench. "The huge downgrade from losing Conte was ignored, deliberately I imagine. I read it and shuddered, because those commentators were using the same words coming out of Filmauro and Castel Volturno [Napoli's training ground]," he wrote.
Azzi then raised an inside account of the exit: "I understand opponents were happy to see Conte go, but even inside Napoli there was someone bragging about having shown him the door. This group had already switched off after the third Scudetto, then Conte dragged Napoli from tenth back to first, and last season, through all sorts of trouble, finished second. To avoid fearing a backlash, you needed incompetence, arrogance or bad faith."

He closed with a sharp comparison: "Ten pupils wanted to leave because the teacher was too strict, then Allegri arrived and they all stayed. What's unexpected or surprising about what's happening now? Nothing." The comments come the day after the defeat in Venice, with Napoli ninth on 10 points after seven games and five defeats in nine matches this season.
