Napoli turned down Premier League interest in Rafa Marín in August

Several English clubs who had watched the centre-back for some time made concrete moves for him in the closing weeks of the transfer window. Napoli shut the door, because Marín and Rrahmani are seen as the central defensive pairing for years to come.

In late August, several Premier League clubs who had followed Rafa Marín for some time made a concrete move to sign him. Napoli said no. The message that filtered out from the club was blunt: Rafa is not for sale.

That came just as the Spaniard was earning a starting place that had looked a long way off only weeks earlier.

Marín's time at Napoli had been anything but straightforward until this summer. He arrived in 2024 and found little room under Antonio Conte in his first season, to the point of going out on loan to Villarreal.

In Spain he built the confidence he had lacked. When he reported for pre-season under Massimiliano Allegri in July, he was ready for the step forward that had eluded him a year earlier.

It took only a handful of training sessions for the head coach to decide to trust him. Then injuries to Buongiorno, Marianucci and Beukema opened the door to the starting defence in a hurry — Marín went from reserve to first-choice within days, alongside Rrahmani, with the understanding between the two growing match by match.

Composure carrying the ball out of defence, well-timed interceptions, clean covering: these are the qualities with which the 2001-born, Real Madrid-trained defender has won over Allegri and his staff.

His words

"I came back to stay," Marín told Kiss Kiss Napoli. "I had to leave because there wasn't the chance to get much game time, but I couldn't wait to come back and I think that shows. I have a great relationship with Allegri, I like his work and training plan, and playing alongside Amir is very easy because he's extraordinary."

He is 24, and the feeling inside the club is that its defence for the future should be built around his development — which is why the English approaches never turned into an actual negotiation.

That individual growth does not erase the defence's problems on its own. Badiashile, signed from Chelsea at the very end of the window, is still waiting for his first league start, while Buongiorno and Marianucci remain sidelined. Marín himself has yet to score, despite regularly pushing forward for high balls, but that detail counts for little against a path that has taken him from outcast to defensive certainty in a matter of months.

On Sunday at the Franchi, against Vanoli's Fiorentina, the pairing with Rrahmani is expected to continue. For Marín, it is a chance to confirm on the pitch what the club had already decided behind closed doors in late August.
