The draw in Florence confirmed a table that reflects a difficult start. Napoli sit ninth with 7 points from five games: two wins, one draw, two defeats. It is not the position the team, or the fanbase, expected to be in at this point of the season.

The gap to the top

Roma, Inter and Lazio all sit level on 13 points, with Cagliari one behind on 12. That is six points between Napoli and the top after just five rounds, a gap that grows matchday by matchday. Milan follow on 11, then Frosinone, Juventus and Como on 10 — the group Napoli, in ninth, need to clear before they can look down the table rather than up it.

A fanbase split, not reassured

The point picked up at the Franchi did not settle anything among supporters. Some are questioning Allegri, others are blaming the club for its decisions in recent months, and others are unhappy with how the team has come across in press conferences. Two unbeaten results in a row have not ended the debate, in a fanbase that wanted more from this squad and this coach.

Serie A now breaks for 19 days. Napoli's next league game is on Saturday 10 October, at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona against Frosinone. Given the current standings, every home fixture from here on carries more weight than the three points on offer.
