Opta Predictor puts Napoli seventh, out of the Champions zone

The model Corriere dello Sport used to project the final Serie A table does not have Napoli in the top six. The Opta Predictor, which simulates the remaining fixtures thousands of times by combining bookmakers' odds with the Opta Power Rankings, has Napoli finishing the season seventh: outside the Champions League zone.

The model breaks the Napoli season down into a range of scenarios: 61.53 points by the end of the campaign, just a 2.94% chance of the title, an 11.35% chance of reaching the Europa League, 11.43% for the Conference League, and a 0.51% relegation risk. Top of the simulation is Inter, projected on 78.18 points with an 88.26% Champions League probability, ahead of Roma and Como.

The numbers arrive three days after the 1-1 draw in Florence, and they capture a Napoli side stuck on 7 points from 5 matchdays, ninth in the table, with only two good results from their last two games. An algorithm decides nothing by itself, but the projection reflects what the pitch has already shown: a team struggling to turn possession into goals, heading into the international break with more doubts than certainties — starting with an attack in which Højlund has touched the ball inside the box just 15 times all season.

A statistical simulation does not assign blame, but the context around it does: this is the same week that has brought talk of a dressing room under tension and a club that has not yet decided whether or how to act. The Predictor simply puts a number on a feeling already circulating in Naples — that this team, with these results, is not heading where the fanbase expects it to go.

It remains a model, not a verdict: the pitch can disprove it, just as it can confirm it. But any rebuttal will have to go through 10 October, when Napoli return to the Maradona against Frosinone after the international break.
