Rizzetta sets 2027 limit on Napoli talks, with Juve Stabia as plan B

If the deal with De Laurentiis falls through, the Underdog founder would move and rename another club. The two sides are still far apart on price.

Matt Rizzetta says he is "confident" of buying Napoli. He has one condition: he does not want the talks to drag on long into 2027.

If the deal with De Laurentiis dies, the founder of Underdog Global Partners, which already owns Napoli Basket, has another plan. He would buy Juve Stabia, currently in Serie B (Italy's second tier), or Real Aversa 1925, in Serie D (the fourth tier). The club he picks would be moved and renamed after a defunct Neapolitan football club. Underdog bought the rights to that club's brand earlier this year.

The two sides are still far apart. De Laurentiis wants around €2bn. Underdog values the club alone at between €1bn and €1.3bn. After the two met last week, De Laurentiis said: "Napoli is not for sale". He has since met the Aponte family in Geneva. Rizzetta's plans also include around €500m to renovate the Maradona through a public-private partnership, which he is already discussing with the city council.

Our reading is that a second club in the city with a Neapolitan name is, above all, a way to push the price down. Meanwhile the football goes on: Juventus-Napoli kicks off on Sunday 1 November at 20:45 CET (19:45 UK, 14:45 ET).
