Former Q8 refinery site for new Napoli stadium priced at €20m or more

The owners will only talk money once the city backs the plan, and Naples city hall has not yet looked at the design.

The site of the former Q8 refinery in eastern Naples, about 25 hectares where Kuwait Italia is cleaning up the soil, has an asking price of at least €20m. A stadium design already exists. It is the work of Gino Zavanella of the Gau Arena studio, and in early October Q8's senior Italian executives saw it at the group's Naples offices. They said they were interested, on one condition: before any talks on price, Aurelio De Laurentiis must bring preliminary approval from the local authorities.

That is where things have stalled. In July, on board the MSC Europa, mayor Gaetano Manfredi said he was ready for a three-way meeting with the president and Roberto Fico, who leads the regional government. Nothing has been heard since. At Palazzo San Giacomo (Naples city hall), nobody has yet seen the renderings or the model. Even after a first political yes, the project would still need a conferenza dei servizi, the formal review in which every public body involved signs off.

Things have not sped up in Geneva with the Apontes either. MSC Cruises' shirt sponsorship also comes into it there: €18m a year, running until 2029.

Our question is simple. The price of the land is known, but the people who have to give the first yes have still not seen the project.
