Napoli have won 59% of matches played with Scott McTominay on the pitch across all competitions since his first season at the club — 48 of 82 games. Without him, that figure drops to 40%, just 6 wins from 15 matches. A 19-point percentage gap, at a moment when Napoli sit ninth with 7 points after 5 matchdays and are struggling to find balance.

The Scot has been out since 9 September, when he underwent an ablation in Manchester for a benign cardiac arrhythmia. He returned to Castel Volturno (the training ground) last Monday, and on Thursday morning did a personalised gym session — the first concrete step back towards full training.
