Viviano: Napoli 'always lose' to Arsenal, Allegri needed to be bolder

The former Fiorentina goalkeeper criticises the ultra-defensive approach in the 0-1 Champions League defeat at the Maradona, though he separates European logic from the league.

Napoli "can never beat Arsenal, they lose 10 times out of 10 for lots of reasons," former Fiorentina goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano said of Wednesday's 0-1 Champions League defeat at the Maradona. He argues the technical gap between the sides was too wide to go toe-to-toe, but that made more aggression necessary, not less. "All the more reason you need to be aggressive at this point," he said, calling on head coach Allegri to "experiment" and "give something more" in terms of play.

Viviano says context matters: in a knockout tie he would accept a cautious approach, but "in the league you can't play matches like that... what's left for a fan today? You could have used the occasion." He also pointed to Luciano Spalletti, who "dominated in Europe against stronger teams despite having a squad stronger than this current Napoli one."

Viviano's comments land with Napoli 12th in Serie A on 3 points from three games, on a run of three straight defeats, and preparing to face Bologna at the Maradona on Sunday.
