Allegri faces ban and possible fine after red card in 3-3 draw with Roma

The Giudice Sportivo (Italy's league disciplinary judge) rules on Monday 26 October. The referee's report and the head coach's "Champions League in the pocket" remark about Roma could both cost him.

Napoli head coach Allegri will learn his punishment on Monday 26 October. He was sent off from the bench late in the 3-3 draw with Roma on Saturday. A one-match ban is the standard outcome, but it may not stop there.

Everything depends on the match officials' report. If it records insulting language towards the referee and his assistants, the sanction becomes heavier and the ban could be extended. Allegri said he was "sent off for nothing", but what referee Colombo wrote will count, not the coach's version.

A second front concerns his words. In his press conference Allegri said Roma had the Champions League "in their pocket". If the federal prosecutor finds a breach of Article 23 of the sports justice code, which covers remarks damaging to the integrity of the competition or the impartiality of referees, he could be fined between €2,500 and €50,000. Napoli could also be fined for not distancing themselves from his comments.

The awkward question is for the club. After a draw that reopened the debate over the team, with the coach already under scrutiny, is another row with referees and prosecutors what Napoli need? They are 10th with 11 points and travel to Monza on Wednesday 28 October at 20:45 CET (19:45 UK, 14:45 ET). If the ban takes effect at once, Allegri could miss the game and his staff would run the team from the bench.
